Thanks Guys,
Where would we be without the Internet ?

This reply from Brian Sheehan sums it all up.

Hi John -

I just came up against the same problem this week. Unfortunately the
answer depends on a couple of things: (1) what version of Open3D you
have, and (2) what kind of graphis card you have.

Since Backing-store/Save-under is disabled, I'll assume you have a
PowerStorm 4D40T or higher. If you have Open3D 4.5 or older, edit
/var/X11/Xserver.conf (make a copy first) and look for a set of lines
like
this:

! you specify command line arguments here
args <
        -pn -nice -2 -bs -su
>

And change them to look like this:

! you specify command line arguments here
args <
        -pn -nice -2
>

You can either restart the X server or reboot the machine.

As of Open3D 4.6 this has changed. Now, the Xserver.conf will look like
this:

! you specify command line arguments here
args <
! Cateye Server args start
        -pn -nice -2
! Cateye Server args end
        -pn
>

And it should be changed to read as follows:

args <
! Cateye Server args start
        -pn -nice -2 -I +e3bs +e3su
! Cateye Server args end
>

(I don't know why there are two "-pn" arguments in the original file,
but
it doesn't seem necessary).

Again, either restart the Xserver or reboot the system.

Hope this helps. If you are still having problems email me back and
we'll
try to figure it out. By the way, this stuff was buried deeply in the
release notes, and it seems to me that DEC could have put a few comment
lines in the Xserver.conf, but noooo.

Also from Oison McGuinness.

See the man page for the X server you are running, e.g., Xdec supports
-bs and -su to turn off these features. The man page gives the file
where
the defaults are set also.

Plus thanks to Girish Phadke who replied with the location of the
Xserver.conf file to edit within 10 minutes of my post - marvelous.
