The original question was:
how come Emacs 19.34 & XEmacs 20.4 don't compile under DU 4.0D with
the native compiler? How do I get it to work?
Numerous answers followed.
The general consensus is "build GNU C and it will all work" (true!)
alternatively a hack for XEmacs is to copy stdio.h into
lib-src/stdio.h and then comment out the definitions which cause
problems when compiling (dirty but gets you an executable eventually).
Another trick was to install the OSFOBSOLETE410 subset and run the
pre-compiled binaries for XEmacs. This gives you back the old
libcurses and incidentally explains why a machine upgraded to 4.0D
works and one which is clean 4.0D doesn't.
