For the sake of closure, the problem was again an /etc/hosts issue.
In this case, there was an incorrect node in the fully qualified
DNS address for this server in the file, and it didn't match the
hostname. I must confess to having looked at it several times,
but only caught it while trying to debug printer problems. Still,
the archives were helpful in alerting me to the possibility that
/etc/hosts might be involved.
