The original posting ---
Has anyone had any experience using non-Digital hard drives in the 4100
using the KZPAC controller (3 channel, wide, differential SCSI)?
In particular, we have seen some other drives such as the Quantum Atlas
drives (which may be the OEM for the DEC drives anyway) available, and I
wondered what the compatibility would be with our existing systems. We
are using RAID sets.
Thanks to the two responders, Rudolf Gabler and David Monroe.
Here is the basic info ---

I'm using 3 IBM 9.1GB DCHS39100W UW-SCSI in DEC-carrier together in a
stripeset with
a good performance. They use one of the 3 channel of the UW-RAID KZPAC
controller.
No fault until now. No experience with other products (unless DEC ones)
beyond in this area.

We've used several different non-Digital hard drives in AlphaServer
systems using the KZPAC controller (not the 4100 specifically). The
Quantum Atlas II 4.5GB drive is the OEM drive for the DEC 4GB model, but
the Atlas II series has been discontinued by Quantum. We've used the
Quantum Viking II drives and they've worked fine with all operating
systems EXCEPT Digital UNIX. We had problems setting up the Quantum
Viking II as a boot drive, and we had to do a couple extra things to get
it running as an additional data drive. However, it did work fine when
used with the KZPAC controller. We've had no problems with the Quantum
Atlas III series (available only in 9GB and 18GB sizes).
Seagate Barracuda and Cheetah drives seem to work very well with all
RAID and non-RAID configurations, and even the IBM UltraStar drives work
well (although I don't believe they're quite as fast as the Seagate
drives). Seagate Barracuda is the OEM drive for the DEC 9GB model.
