awk: changing 2 digits from 1 number

Hallo awks,
take the following table as an example, where a number always appears at
position 5:


moon earth 1000456 man wife
moon earth 1000333 man wife
moon earth 1000226 man wife
moon earth 1000789 man wife


how could i change the first 2 digits - and only them - automaticaly
into any other value, lets say 38. AWK? SED????
