The AlphaStation 600 has an I/O subsystem module which includes two
identical SCSI connectors. One connector goes to internal drives first and
then to a narrow (50-pin) high-density external connector. The second
connector goes directly to a wide (68-pin) high-density external connector.
The former is bus scsi0; the latter is bus scsi1.
Evidently when putting my system back together the Digital technician wired
the SCSI busses backwards. I opened the system up, swapped the SCSI cables
on the I/O subsystem module and just like magic, everything was back to
normal.
