Hi again,
Here is the summary to my question. Thanks to:

They'll work. Of course, undocumented bugs etc. might be
introduced, but basically, DEC UNIX versions are downwards compatible.
Even the binaries from earlier versions (3.2x) run on 4.0x.

Your base OS upgrade path is to first go to, say, V4.0A, then to V4.0D, as
you can't get directly from V4.0 to V4.0D via installupdate.
You should not need to deinstall/reinstall your layered products for this to
work. The older products SHOULD be binary compatible with V4.0D; but that
is not something I can promise you, you will need to do appropriate testing
in your environment to be confident they are working correctly, unless they
were tested by their respective product groups on V4.0D. That would happen
if they were the then-current versions when V4.0D shipped last January, and
while V4.0D was in active qual in the latter part of 1997. If there have
been newer versions of those products released since, say, September 1997,
then it's not just possible but likely that the older versions were never
tested on V4.0D, but because the base OS makes a serious effort to maintain
binary compatibility, the older versions should still work. As for your Y2K
concerns, the ONLY way to be reasonably sure that layered products will be
fully Y2K compliant is to use versions that were tested on V4.0D, since that
is the first version of DIGITAL UNIX on which layered product testing could
be sure that any Y2K problems were due to the layered product and not due to
the base OS. So, if the product is shipping on the current DIGITAL UNIX LP
library CD (I just received my Q3CY98 update, that's current) then what's on
the current library SHOULD be Y2K compliant; I believe that by now we pulled
any products that are not. If you have the Q1CY98 library and it's got the
same versions as what you've got already, you should be golden.
As for the cost of LP updates, our update licensing business rule says that
if the version NUMBER does not change, only a suffix letter (e.g., from V4.0
to V4.0D or V3.2 to V3.2G) then you don't need an update license, a license
for the base version (V4.0 or V3.2) is good for the subsequent letter also.
You can not ASSUME that a version that isn't listed on Digital's Year 2000
web site (or that wasn't delivered after roughly January 1998) is compliant;
it may have no problems at all, but unless you test it yourself and decide
you are safe, you are taking a risk. If the product has been delivered on
the DIGITAL UNIX LP library CD since January, 1998 or is listed on the web
site as being Y2K compliant, then you can trust it. I haven't gone looking
at either the LP CD or the web site for the products you mention, but that
is where you have to look.
If you weren't all the way down in Australia (where it's as wintry as it
gets about now, I suppose, since it's high summer here in New Hampshire), I
would offer to send you a copy of the latest LP CD as a courtesy, but if you
can not lay your hands on one closer to home, I might be persuaded to pull
the kits for the products you'd need and get them to you somehow, such as if
you have a place they could be pushed via anonymous ftp..

My original question:
Hi,
I searched the Digital WEB site and keep going round in circles not
getting the info I am after.
The problem is, I want to upgrade Digital Unix V4.0 to V4.0D. I will
also upgrade to the latest 'Digital Unix C Developer's Extension'.
The question is:
I have: DEC Fuse V3.0
DEC Fuse C++ Support
DEC C++ V5.4
These all run fine on V4.0.
If I upgrade to V4.0D, can I still run with the current DEC Fuse and C++ I have ??
Or will I have to upgrade these components as well.
The reason with the upgrade is for Y2000. Do DEC Fuse V3.0 and DEC C++ V5.4 have
problems with Y2000 ??
The reason I do not want to upgrade Fuse and C++ is the cost.
Any explanations/help will be appreciated.
