NFS weirdness SGI<-DEC

Can any of you help me out with this one: A user logged on an OCTANE running
6.5 issues a 'ls' on a autofs mounted (NFS3) directory from a DEC Alpha NFS
server. The response is nada. No files are listed (yes, it is confirmed that
the directory really contains some files by doing 'ls' on the server
itself). When the user issues a 'touch' on the directory followed by a 'ls'
everything is OK, ie all the files are 'visible' again. The server runs
Digital Unix 4.0b, patchset 5, Oct. 97.
