How to know that I'm successful compiling Sendmail 8.9.1

I compiled Sendmail v8.9.1 on Digital Unix4.0D, by using sh Build and sh Build install, but when I tried to test sendmail by using sendmail commmand but it failed , it showed that there is no sendmail.cf in /etc ,how can I know that I compile Sendmail 8.9.1 completely ? And how to test this ? Thanks.
