My serial port problems have just seemed to disappear thankfully. It
appears two things were required:
1) Serial port #1 could not be used as we have the remote dial-in
control pre-installed on the box (even tho we are not using it)
2) a reboot of the system seems to have cleaned up anything
that might have been blocking communication with the UPS.
