Thanks for your responses...

the general conscensus was that a 9Gb drive
SPARESET will replace a 4Gb RAID drive, but
with only have 4Gb of usable space.

I understand that the disk in the SPARESET has to be "at least as large as
the largest disk it would replace", so your 9GB disk should work fine.

This isn't a RAIDArray cabinet (ie. RAIDArray 410), is it? If so, the
physical configuration may not be able to support the 9GB drive (power
requirements, heat disapation, etc.).

However, I think the problem is that you **may not** be able to get to
the
remaining unused space on that particular disk (ie. you would be wasting
5GB of disk space).

You would definately want to get a replacement 4GB disk in your system
ASAP.

Hope this helps you out.

According to the documentation I have it should be acceptable to add a 9Gb
disk as a spareset device. The parameter POLICY will dictate how the
failed
drive is replaced, and the controller will limit the capacity of larger
drives within a raidset to the capacity of the smallest disk. I would
suggest that you use the 9Gb disk while the faulty 4Gb unit is being
repaired/replaced and then revert to the 4Gb unit.

I think what will happen is that it will roll in the 9GB, but only use
4GB. I'm interested in hearing what happens. I'd also like to know
what happens if you have a 4GB and a 9GB and fail a 9GB -- will it
always roll over to the 4GB? (Just in case one of Compaq's StorageWorks
folks contacts you.)

The HSZ will use larger devices for member replacement. There are
options available through the CLI to control what sort of device
it will prefer. If you add a 9 GB and a 4 GB drive you can use
these options to make sure one or the other is used. If you add
only the 9 GB drive I think it will be used not matter how the
options are set, but check the HSZ documentation.

I believe you can use a 9GB disk but you can only utilize 4GB if the other
disks in the raidset are 4Gb disks.

I am on a 4100 with HSZ50's. I have not lost any disks, but according to
our DEC/Compaq var and the local DEC field engineer the 9gigs that are
configured in our spareset WILL cover both the 4gig and 9gig live disks.
