The answer to this is from Blake Roberts. My original question follows:

I'm not sure about VMS, but a DE500 works just fine with Oracle's sqlnet and
everything else that they have for Oracle7 in the Digital UNIX world. All
of my DB servers have DE500's on them, so if they didn't work, my VLDB and
warehouse machines would not be doing too well right now (needless to say my
employment status as well).
