I want to thank all of those whose responded. I received some
good replies and learned a little more about the alpha processors.
My original question had some incorrect information. What I wanted
to know was if my mother board (EB164 or AlphaPC164 )could support a
500 MHZ CPU(and if not what the maximum speed was). I had hoped
to be able to upgrade the speed somewhat for a modest sum
(and hopefully no problems).
>From the responses I received, I believe the fastest EV5 processor
would be 366 MHz which doesnt help any. I could upgrade to a new
motherboard and EV56 processor, but that is more money.
And, from the manufacturer of my system:
"Sorry, but you will have to get a new Alpha MB if you want to upgrd the CPU
to 500MHz."
I was also pointed to the axp_list_at_redhat.com mailing list for possible help
on the matter. That did lead to some information from suppliers of CPU's and
motherboards.
It looks like If I want to significantly upgrade the CPU, a new motherboard will
have to be purchased.
So, I guess I will stick with what I have for right now.
