Printer Problems on a Alpha Server 1000

Gentlemen,

We recently rebuilt a Alpha 1000A after a hardware failure and have
fully restored all the applications, but have run into a problem with
getting the unit to print. Here is the system information:

It is an AS1000A running Digital UNIX 4.0d and running UNISPOOL and
SPSS as applications.

The problem is that whenever we try to print (using lpr or lp)
command we get the following response:

# lp .profile
printer lp non-existent
# lpr .profile
printer lp non-existent

We have checked the UNISPOOL printer applications and all those
daemons are running properly and the printers are listed as online.
We also checked the /etc/printcap file and the printers are defined
there as they were before the crash (actually using the restored
file). I did note that in the Printer Configuration GUI that there is
no default printer listed in the box near the bottom of the first
window. When I choose a printer and click on Make Default, the GUI
closes and when I re-enter there is still no printer in the default
window.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
