Terminal attached to workstation

Hallo,

I want to attach a standard Digital VT330 Terminal to the serial
port (/dev/tty00) of an Alpha Workstation. The Terminal ist set
to vt100.

When running '/usr/sbin/getty tty00 9600 vt100' it is complaining
about a missing or not accessible controlling tty (I can't remember
the exact phrase) and gives 'errno=1' in the console window.
Nevertheless the cammand goes on and the login message and the login
prompt is displayed on the terminal. I can type a user name an the
password prompt occurs. When I type in a password, the text is
visible (!) and when I press CR, nothing happens further on.

If I run (for testing purposes)
'telnet localhost </dev/tty00 2>&1 >/dev/tty00' all I/O is done
via /dev/tty00 and I can work without any problems on the terminal.

Any ideas why the getty is not working?

Thanks in advance and best regards,
Volker Hejny
