TIOCGETD invalid argument

stty TIOCGETD invalid argument

Prevents use of dxterm, xterm and telnet. Showed itself after
installation of consolidated patch-kit for 3.2c duv32cas00004-19980414
on our test servers.

Can't get to single user mode, boot from CD is not preferable as root
volume is LSM encapsulated.

Any ideas?
