Having dd'd a 4.2GB from an 8mm tape to an empty 15GB disk, the
attempt to repeat the procedure with a second tape was met with
dd's message "No space left on device". It took a reboot to be
able to dd the second tape. [After this message was posted, a
third tape was dd'd without any error messages.]
I received two responses. One suggested to verify that the out
of space message referred to the output and not the input, by
reading the 2nd tape and writing to /dev/null. Also, to check
the error log to see if the drive might have been faulting.
The problem was not encountered in a successive try, so I
couldn't apply the first suggestion. I did check that there
were no logged errors.
The second answer encouraged me to update to V4.0D and patch
kit 3 (plus the DNS patch), since there had been many updates
to both dd and nfs since V4.0 was released.
