character device confusion w/ DU NFS exports

Good afternoon, this problem was presented back in May as a problem
with netbooting Linux boxes off of a DU4.0b machine.

I am trying to netboot an Ultrix box off of my 4.0d machine and I'm
having the same problem.

The problem - The Ultrix root filesystem looks like this when it is
placed on a DU4.0d machine.

cr-------- 1 root wheel 0,17664 Jan 25 11:24 audit
crw------- 1 root wheel 0,24320 Jan 25 11:24 cam
crw--w--w- 1 root wheel 0, 0 Jan 25 11:31 console
crw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 0,10240 Jan 25 11:24 crl
brw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 0, 4104 Jan 25 11:24 cs1a
brw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 0, 4106 Jan 25 11:24 cs1c

While the data stays in the kernel cache, it looks like the above and
is exported correctly to the Ultrix client. However, once the data
gets flushed from the kernel cache and reloaded, it becomes:

cr-------- 1 root wheel 69, 0 Jan 25 11:24 audit
crw------- 1 root wheel 95, 0 Jan 25 11:24 cam
crw--w--w- 1 root wheel 0, 0 Jan 25 11:31 console
crw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 40, 0 Jan 25 11:24 crl
brw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 16, 8 Jan 25 11:24 cs1a
brw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 16, 10 Jan 25 11:24 cs1c

At this point the Ultrix client is no longer usable. This looks like
a word size problem... for example, cs1c - 16*256 + 10 = 4106

How can I export the Ultrix devices from a DU4.0d machine without them
getting their device numbers jumbled?

Thanks for any assistance anyone can provide!
