Hello,
I was about to install Digital UNIX on an AlphaPC164 (it has
21172 core chip and the 21164 at 433MHz). It has only built in
EIDE ports, a CDROM (SAMSUNG) and a HDD (FUJITSU). The SRM is v5.3.
The SRM recognizes both drives and is able to start booting from
the CDROM. However, after loading it stops with the message
about "bus timeout". This is an excerpt from the screen (there
maybe typos or even lines missing):
>>> boot dqa1
...
pci0 at nexus
trio0 at pci0 slot 5
isa0 at pci0
gpc0 at isa0
ace0 at isa0
lp0 at isa0
fdi0 at isa0
fd0 at fdi0 unit 0
ata0 at pci0 slot 11
ata0: CMD PCI0646
cam_logger: CAM_ERROR packet
cam_logger: bus 0
ata_reset
Reset failed - busy stayed set
ss_perform_timeout
timout on request on the bus, scheduled bus reset
...
After third timeout the kernel reports that there's no dump
device available.
I think that v4.0D should support IDE devices for booting.
However, now I can't find anything about it neither in SPD nor in
the archive.
If anybody can give a clue on how should I proceed... maybe buy a SCSI
controller and forget about IDE?
Cheers.
