[SUMMARY] DEC 3000/300 booting problem

Well, given the original problem of a 3000/300 w/ firmware 7.0 not
booting on reset/cold boot with AUTO_ACTION = BOOT the consensus is on
AUTO_ACTION = RESTART but unfortunately it makes no difference to the
box. It still sits there at the '>>>' prompt when I power it on or
'shutdown -r' it.

Rather unfortunate. I guess I need to call the field circus out.

Abundant thanks in the direction of Larry Griffith <larry_at_cs.wsc.ma.edu> who
waited for a victim to log out of a 3000/300 and nuked it to check the
settings at his place. Given that RESTART works for him and not for me
there is clearly an issue beyond SETENV...

Dear Arrigo,

I took the opportunity to shut down a 3000/300 that
temporarily had no users. My settings are the same as yours except
for the following:

AUTO_ACTION RESTART
BOOTDEF_DEV DKA0 (The disk in this machine is at SCSI 0)
ENABLE_AUDIT ON (At one time I had to do auditing)
ETHERNET (Obviously my MAC address is different from
yours)
LANGUAGE 3 (Language difference, should be irrelevant)
MOP ON (Not sure about this, but the manual says it
"displays the NI (Ethernet) listener. On
means "network listener enabled. Receive and
                        transmit network messages". This
may be something to try. I'm not sure if this
has anything to do with the old MOP protocol.)
SECURE ON (My machines are in a public place. Hitting
the reset switch and booting to single user
mode to become root is just too easy.)

        I hope something here helps.

                                                        Larry
