Thanks to Sridhar Dhati who pointed me in the right direction,
there seems to be problem with ARC above version 5.3 with our
Alphastation 255 it clashes with something possibly the raid controller
with a message about invalid NVRAM data, which is unfortunate as that is
why I needed the ARC console to configure the raid. I managed to get
back to the SRM console using a boot floppy disk created with a utility
called mkbootfirm which is available from
ftp://ftp.digital.com/pub/Digital/Alpha/firmware and changing some
jumpers on the motherboard to allow booting from the floppy drive. I
then pulled the raid controller out of the workstation and configured it
in a PC, when configured I replaced it in the workstation. At that point
Compaq/Digital helpline finally got back to me. Anyway everything is up
and running OK now.
