My understanding remains incomplete: the "solution" was to reboot the client.
DEC TSC (aka Compaq blablabla) said that a "umount", "mount" would be
sufficient, because the client seems to have an open (link?, request?,
connection?) to a file, which no longer exists on the server. But i was
not able to identify that missing file or its location.
Lucio Chiappetti <lucio_at_ifctr.mi.cnr.it> pointed me to "nfswatch",
which is a utility to monitor nfs-traffic and which i was not aware of yet.
See "man nfswatch"

But i was not able to find an appropriate conversion which ends up in
a number that i see in my above error message...
So i did what was easiest (-> reboot) even if i wanted to learn how
to solve this problem without rebooting...
Thanx again!
