rsh consumes all the cpu when running imapd

DU4.0E has just been installed on machine X, which is our imap server. Now
when I type

  rsh X /etc/rimapd

on that machine, which is what pine effectively does, things work as
expected except the rsh process uses 99.9% (or however much it can get) of
the cpu resources. This happens with the imapd from the pine 4.05 and
4.10 distributions, but not 3.96. Also it seems to only happen with users
whose shell is bash 2.02. It does not happen on the machines still
running DU4.0D. I tried recompiling bash and imapd but the same thing
happened. Can someone suggest how to fix this, or at least give me an idea
of something to try? Thanks.
