I upgraded to 4.0E this weekend and what a nightmare.
First of all the tape devices are missing if you boot from
the cd and take the Unix Shell option. I had to reconfigure
my root disk and had to boot from cd. The upgrade to 4.0E
was pretty simple otherwise. Finally figured out you can
do a MAKEDEV tz(x) and it will make all the devices for you.
Then the big one came. Once i repartitioned the drive, I
began to reload the disk from backup. I have been
accustomed to using restore -i (interactive option) and
issuing the add command which will add everything in the
file system and then doing an extract. Well I couldnt
login after doing this. I had no shell. I could get a
login prompt but never get logged in. I re-loaded the data
several times but the same results. I finally
figured out that the /usr/bin/sh among other files
were not being restored. Finally I decided to use restore
-rv and everything worked great. So I guess there is
either a bug in the interactive mode or there is a limit on
the number of files it is able to mark and extract. Just
thought I would pass this along in case someone else
stumbles across it as well.
