I must repeat, problem apears suddenly, without any configurations changes.

Here is a possible solution :
One or both of your Alphaservers may be configured with a DNS nameserver
which
was one of the PCs that was disconnected or the nameserver holds wrong
information.
Check the entries in /etc/resolv.conf on the 2000 and the 4100 to see if you
have entries for DNS servers. If you do, try running nslookup to see if you
can
resolve the IP address of the remote AS. It's possible that names are being
correctly resolved in one direction but not the other ie. reverse lookup is
failing. This would explain the long response times.
