vrestore screws up fileset size

Dear Managers,

This is partly a warning and partly a request for comment from Digital.
There is a nasty misfeature in vrestore which has caused us a lot of
grief. You can work round it, but every so often you forget.

The misfeature is that vrestore overwrites the fileset quota information,
including the fileset size. This is useful in situations where someone has
melted your disc and you need to recreate it the same as before, but a
much more common use of vrestore is to restore a handful of files which
someone has accidentally deleted.

I like to restore files to a scratch area, because users rarely know
precisely what needs restoring, so you can just restore a whole directory
tree and let them copy the files they want.

Unfortunately when you do this vrestore (by default) copies the quota
information from the backup tape! Not only will the quota information be
utterly messed up, but the also the fileset size will be copied from the
original fileset. So suddenly your fileset becomes (e.g.) 150% full.

There are 2 workrounds:
(1) ALWAYS use '-o ask' on the vrestore command and reply No when it
offers to rewrite quota information.
(2) Maintain a script containing the necessary chfsets commands to fix
your filesets if you ever forget (1).

This problem is present on 4.0B (patch kit 7), and I believe it is also
present on 4.0D. Does Digital have any plans to fix it?

I hope this is an acceptable use of the list: I will of course summarise
any comments I get.

Regards,
Bob
