Thanks - Tony

On the 10/2/98 I circulated a problem relating to a rental 4100 which
wont boot. The original posting is at the end of this mail.

I had several replies coming in almost immediately. The problem was
solved by updating the SRM console firmware to V5.3.

Thanks to the following (in no particular order):

Arrigo Triulzi <arrigo_at_albourne.com>
Arnold Sutter, UDT
Oisin McGuinness
Burch Seymour

Paul Young

After you put it together, did you run ECU? If you don't do that it
might not see the serial ports, or the keyboard/rodent (if you used
the SVGA video)...

I had the same problem with a 2100, which had a graphics card installed,
but would not recognise the VT connection even with the console set to
serial.....same message as the one you have seen. I got around the
problem
by inserting the ECU floppy and running ECU. This set up the variables
(or
whatever the environment needed) to recognise the console and all was
well.
If I remember correctly, I only needed to enter 'ecu' at the SRM prompt
to
get the menu, and was then able to carry on as normal (ie. return to
booting the machine).

It sounds to me like the hardware information database related to the
EISA bus is set up wrong.

Find the EISA configuration utility (ECU) diskette for the V4.0D
release (it should have come with the hardware, it's in an update kit
but I don't think it is in the base OS original purchase kit), and
make sure the serial lines in the system are defined in the ECU data.

I'm sure more knowledgable people than I will respond, but my first
guess
would be to ask if you have the proper firmware loaded into the system.

If it's a rental the who knows what the last user had in it....

Sounds mostly like a firmware revision issue; try upgrading the SRM
firmware to a level 4.0D is happy with; at least v5.0 for 4100 and 4.0D
according to the firmware CD that came with 4.0D; you
can get more recent versions from DEC's web site.

maybe you should try to ECU it.

Do a
>>>clear_arc_nvram
and then load the ECU floppy for Digital UNX.

Maybe things improve after that.

Mmh, check the 'server' variable. You prob. don't want that set if it
exists. Also, can't you try plugging something into the serial port,
e.g. a PC with a null-modem (laplink) cable running some crap Windoze
terminal emulator (9600,8,n,1)?

Hi all...

I need your help once again.

I have just taken delivery of a rental-4100.

Have plugged it together. I can see all the disks, tapes etc.

When attempting to boot from the installation CD (v4.0d), all appears to
be ok until it craps out as follows:

configure_console: no serial driver from get_info
no kernel console driver installed
panic (cpu 0): system does not have a console attached

This has 4 CPU's 1gb memory. I have set the console type to "serial"
from graphics and it makes no difference.

Have power cycled the box to no avail. Does this sound to you like a
hardware problem?? If the cd wont boot it seems pretty fundamental.

Any ideas appreciated.

Regards - Tony
