I received reports from
Alan Davis
Randall R. Cable
 Dr. Thomas P. Blinn

My original question, was basically
1. what does the above file do

I was given the information that it was part of the kernels advfs support.
It was not really answered, but I conclude that it was part of the base
installation, not a file you would really configure, individually for a
system.

2. What will happen if I overwrote it with patch kit 3.
Basically I used a combination of
1. manually extracting the patch into a temporary space and comparing the
file with the one on the system.
2. using file
3. using what
4. using setld

to find out how close the files were.

There were some differences, which did not really help me out. Both
versions according to file were 3.11-10 although what indicated that there
were some version differences.

We ha ve probably had 18 months worth of support people coming in and
investigating LSM on this system, as we had a PCI backplane problem which
took quite a while to work out. During this time there were some ADVFS
patches applied by DIGITAL staff, and in hindsight we should have asked for
the exact numbers.

So what we ended up doing was holding onto our seats, backing up, bracing
ourselves (8400 with 300+GB of data at present, so I didn't really want to
restore from tape), and overwriting the files.

I am pleased to say that it all appears to be OK.
