Console Desktop Hiccup

One of my systems has developed an annoying glitch: the default desktop font
for the console has got its character map scrambled. The keyboard is fine,
but the output to an xterm or to NSR has about 20% of the letters wrong; for
instance, lowercase "d" is presented as ":".

Switching the default font (from the desktop toolbar) to a larger or smaller
one clears up the xterms, but not NSR.

I'm willing to treat it as happenstance this time, but how can I refresh the
fonts without becoming a CDE wizard?

Thanks, I'll summarise.
