shm-max limitation in size

We have 2 new GS140 alphas with 8GB memory each, running
DU4.0E. We are installing oracle on them, and our DBA wants
to set the ipc parameter "shm-max" to 7.5GB. My reading of the
documentation indicates that this parameter's units are in
bytes, so I set the value:

ipc:
shm-max = 8053063680

but on reboot, just as the system loads vmunix, it complains:

sysconfigtab: attribute shm-max in subsystem ipc value/size must be >= 0

I talked to DEC support and they said shm-max can't be greater than 2 GB?!?!

This seems like a tremendous limitation. Anyone have any info on it? The system
will be a standalone oracle server, and we want to use all the memory for
oracle alone.

Advice?
TIA!!
