Problems applying patch kit #3 on 4.0D

Managers,
We have a DecStation 3000/600 that was running DU 4.0D with patch kit
#2 applied successfully. When we attempted to apply patch kit #3, things
were going O.K. until one of the patches said that a specific file it was
looking for 'did not look like a tar archive'. The next line said that it
had corrupted input. Then the system reported 'working...' for the next 4
hours. Not wanting to let it continue overnight I killed it with <ctrl>c.
We then re-downloaded the patch and re-applied again. This time it seemed
to work successfully until we attempted to rebuild a new kernel. Now the
kernel build errors off with 'object file format error in:
/usr/ccs/lib/libc.a'. How can I fix this problem, and will I potentially
encounter any other errors from the <ctrl>c that I did when first
attempting patch kit #3?
     Thanks in advance,
          - SDM
