Alpha 3000/600, OSF1/3.2
This has me stumped. This machine allows remote logins but console
login hangs at the dxsession process: login screen passess and user's
login hangs with "X" cursor, no mwm, and console log window is still
present (hasn't been cleared from display as it does during normal
login). Ps -fu user shows a dxsession process, only, running under
user's UID.
Root can login to console with no problem! Root $HOME is in / file-
system, of course, and not in /home where users' $HOME are.
Before the problem, users' home dir. was nfs-mounted from AIX machine.
Everything worked fine. What did I do? :
I wanted to move the /home to an SGI, IRIX 6.4.
I tar the /home contents to a filesystem on the SGI,
umount /home on the alpha, change the fstab /home entry,
export /home on the SGI to the alpha (and every other
host in the NIS cluster), remount /home to alpha. All other
cluster hosts make transition OK with no similar problem as here.
Other hosts include IRIX 6.3-4, DU 4.0b-d, AIX 4.1.4.
Remote logins for any user work, with $HOME appropriately
set, etc. Everyone can see their home dir.s OK with remote login.
Why would the above changes affect console logins only?
Any help appreciated.
