genvmunix won't boot

I need to boot the genvmunix to add some new hardware ( a single hard drive
) but.....

>>> boot -fl genvmunix

Enter [option_1...option_n]:
Bad Magic number

>>>

I rebuilt the generic kernel

cp /genvmunix /genvmunix.old
doconfig -c GENERIC
cp /sys/GENERIC/vmunix /genvmunix

and still have the same problem. Is this failing because of the new
hardware or because something is wrong with the generic kernel??

This is a 2100 4/275 DU 3.2g, I'm adding a new 9.1G drive to the last slot
on the internal storage array in split-bus mode its a KZPSC-AA. Just FYI
the RAID controller finds the drive and init's it without problem.

TIA for any input
