internal synchronization error?

I'm seeing
        rm: internal synchronization error:
on my nightly syslog.dated rotation/deletion cron job. The machine
is running DU4.0D+pl2 (at least - could be pl3), and I'm *not* using
AdvFS. Everything else seems normal.

What's going on?
