Dear OSF-Managers:
I read your guide on POP setup posted in Dec. 1995 and
it helped me alot understand the POP issue.
I am using Digital UNIX ver. 4.0E
However, I got stuck in some steps as I followed the guide.
What I thought were successfully done:
pop group/account creation:
pop:*:30:pop,pop-david,pop-kevin
/usr/spool/pop/POP database creation:
pop:*:57:30:MH POP:/usr/spool/pop:/:
What I thought were not successfully done:
/usr/lib/mh/popaka aliases:
david: david_at_pop
kevin: kevin_at_pop
(question: does popaka in ver. 4.0E contain the link bug?),
/usr/sbin/newaliases reported:
# /usr/sbin/newaliases
WARNING: writable directory /var
WARNING: writable directory /var
WARNING: writable directory /var
WARNING: writable directory /var
WARNING: writable directory /var
WARNING: writable directory /var
/var/adm/sendmail/aliases: 5 aliases, longest 9 bytes, 74 bytes total

(question: why are there warnings?)
/usr/lib/mh/popwrd pop-david reported:
# /usr/lib/mh/popwrd pop-david
Permission denied.
(question: why was even the root permission denied?)
Then I finished the rest of the steps:
->assign a mask of 'rwsr-xr-x' and th owner 'pop' for /usr/lib/mh/spop
But I didn't found any process like 'inetd' so there was no such
process to kill (?) I just started /usr/sbin/inetd & and then
/usr/lib/mh/popd -p 110 >& /dev/null & as instructed.
Afterall, the POP server still didn't work. That means I can
only use both david and kevin accounts to exchange internal mails
and to SEND ONLY mails to outside, but I am not able to receive
any outside mails because of the POP setup failure. Oh, david
and kevin are accounts already exist in the UNIX system. In
addition, do I have to configure the sendmail.cf or to run mailsetup,
bindsetup, pppd, smtpd, popd, and mailconfig before or after POP
server configuration?
Please advice and it is greatly appreciated.
