Hi --
On March 8, I described for the list a problem with the backup process
for our Network Appliance file server. Backups are done with a Perl
script which rsh's the dump command on the file server. The script is
(ideally) run out of cron on our True 64 Unix administrative host. The
problem was that the weekly full backups failed when the Perl script
was run out of cron. Running the script from the command line worked;
running the script out of cron for the daily incrementals also worked.
The problem was apparently solved by installing Patch Kit 003 for
Tru 64 Unix 4.0D. This gives new copies of both cron and rsh. I say
``apparently'' because there's nothing in the patch kit docs that
give any details as to what problems the patched cron & rsh fix. But
the bottom line is that this weekend's full backup worked when run
out of cron, when they were consistently failing before.
Many thanks to the folks who tried to help with this problem
and provided a number of good guesses:

Of these, Lisa was probably closest, pointing to a bug she experienced
in 4.0D when going to Solaris boxes.
