User authentication over multiple servers.

Hi all,
I have a question regarding user authentication mechanisms for
Digital Unix 4.0d. I have a number of systems which I want to be able to
set-up with the same accounts and passwords. I could use NIS but quite
honestly I want something more secure. I could use the /etc/passwd / C2
distribution stuff provided with TruCluster/ASE but then any machine I
wanted to include would need to be running TruCluster/ASE. I was
considering using some _other_ source for authentication, perhaps NDS from
Novell but I would prefer to keep control of the accounts within my own
domain. I would also like the authentication session to be reasonably
secure (probably more of an application issue though...)....

The initial use of this technology will be to provide a clustered IMAP
service scaling to 1000's of users so whatever is considered must be able
to scale up reasonably efficently...

Any pointers to products free or commercial which might go someway to
answering this are welcome.
