Thanks to Jiri Landkammer and Alan for their responses to my question on
starting X-server problem.

Problem description: on booting the AlphaStation the following message
is showed (X-server can not be started.) and promt for a login in the
text environment (not in CDE).

Solution:

What you need to do is find out what is missing and corrupt
and then restore those files from a distribution or backup.

You can use the fverify command to read the subset inventory
files to see what is missing or changed. Many files do
change, but most don't. Looking at the content you should
be able to tell which is which. So, go through the installed
subsets one by one and see what's broken. Be sure to use the
option to fverify that doesn't try to fix permissions or
        ownership.

Yes, the corrupt subset was "OSFSER405 X Servers Base (Window
Environment)". Restoring it from distribution solved the problem.

Thank you,

Carlos.
