Custom GUI PC to server applet?

I am implementing a large ERP system running on a set of central
servers. The user interface is based on java applets running on
either PC's or thin clients. There are several situations where
the users need to modify the server environment, to turn on and
off queueing to specific printers for example, or to notify the
users of events.

The options that I see are :
        Server changes :
                1) Users open terminal window to server and execute
                commands
                2) Web form using CGI
                3) Java applet
        User notification :
                1) Email
                2) Web server push
                3) Java applet

This has probably been solved by others before me, I'm looking
for suggestions and hopefully a pointer to a sample solution.
