Setting Permissions

hi,
We are running du40e and we use 3 partitions:
/, /var, /usr. After the installation of the system
the /var had the folowing permissions :
drwxrwxr-x 23 root system 512 Apr ... /var
We use UFS. I am trying to change the permisions
for /var -> cd /;chmod 755 /var , but when ever
we reboot the system the var directory has the
write bit for group enable. In single user mode
the /var directory is drwxr-xr-x.

Am i missing anything??
