This problem turned out to be that the rpc.statd was not running on the
machines experiencing the problem.
As yet we have not found the cause of rpc.statd not running. However it is
easily fixed by killing the running rpc.lockd and restarting the rpc.statd
and rpc.lockd
If anyone has any theories about why the rpc.statd should die in this fashion
I would be very interested to hear them!
