Dear all Du Folk
A plethora of responses - all pretty much spot on the mark.
My running kernel would not find the KZPBA-CA device - so no matter
how tricky I tried to be with a recompile of MAKEDEV, no joy.
Booting from genvmunix then running doconfig was the answer - I am
somewhat embarrassed by the simplicity of the solution.
Gyula Szokoly also had an interesting response regarding manual
addition to /sys/conf/HOSTNAME.
His response is:
An other possibility is that even genvmunix
does not support the new
card. This was true at one point for some
turbochannel cards (like mine
in a 3000/600). In that case I had to do it by hand.
I had to insert by
hand the following in /sys/conf/HOSTNAME (replace
hostname with the
real one):
bus tcds1 at tc0 slot 2
vector tcdsintr
controller scsi2 at tcds1 slot 0
controller scsi3 at tcds1 slot 1
Than I did a '/sys/conf/config HOSTNAME', followed
by a 'make' in
/sys/HOSTNAME, to build a new kernel. Try genvmunix
first
('boot -fi "genvmunix").
My thanks to him and to the MANY and rapid responses from everybody else.
This mailing list has never let me down and is an excellent reference
library.
ORIGINAL QUESTION:
I have an Alphaserver800 with latest firmware, running DU4.0D. I
have installed a KZPBA-CA SCSI controller for this machine. At SRM level I
can see this device no problem. However when I boot into TRU64 Unix I am
beating my brow trying to see the device.
There is a DLT 35-70GB tape drive attached to the end of the SCSI
controller and I have run the "eeromcfg" utility from alphabios and this
appears to be okay - SCSI termination options set to auto-terminate at
controller. Physical termination on tape drive.
I have recompiled the kernel with "doconfig -a", even tried a
MAKEDEV of "TMS".
Still I cannot see the tape drive , let along the scsi controller.
I feel I am missing doing something very obvious.
Any opinions / advice gratefully received.
Sincerely,
Malcolm Condie
