(The question follows the response summary)
Condensed version:
1. All firmware versions for the HSZ40 family support redundant controllers.
2. If you want to make the controllers (HSZ40C) dual-redundant ie. in the
same backplane, it's ok, but the firmware versions must match exactly.
3. If you wish to add another separate controller, it is suggested that you
attach it to another controller. In this case the firmware version does
not matter too much, but should be as recent as possible. Or, when a
redundant configuration is setup properly the host doesn't know the
difference, so it is irrelevant to the upgrade.
4. Whether you can still get HSZ40C upgrades is another matter. (Yes,
Compaq still sells HSZ40 to HSZ50 upgrades.)
5. Order the subscription service that gets you new updates as they're
available.
6. Make sure that none of the back-end SCSI devices are using ID 6, since
that is the address the 2nd controller will use.
I will be adding a second HSZ40C, replacing system disks, adding cluster
disks, upgrading the OS from 3.2g to 4.0d, upgrading SS7, and TruCluster
on redundant 2100A's running a live cell phone system. I hope this works
or you might hear about a phone system going down...
Again, thanks.
