SUMMARY: Question about filesystem behaviour

Thanks to Dr Tom Blinn, alan_at_nabeth.cxo.dec.com and James Sainsbury
for there replies.

The general consensus is that when closing a file there is a lot
of cleanup for the operating system to do, including internal structres
and flushing of at least some of the meta-data to disk.

As as side note, I found the article in the 4.0E release notes that
describes how to up the number of open files for a process to 64k.
