merging 2 running systems

Good morning (or afternoon) to everybody!

My 4100 & my 1000 (4.0d 3rd patch) were both giving bad messages when
vrestoring from multi-tapes backups. It happened from any tape drive
(tlz07, tz885, tkz09), and any SCSI controller (kzpaa, kzpba).
While vrestoring when the EOT of the first dumped tape was reached
instead of ask for netx tape, the tape was ejected and the following
message was written:
vrestore: Date of the vdump save-set: Thu Mar 25 12:24:24 1999
Exit the interactive shell without restoring any files.
        unknown command
But placing the next tape and pressing return, the vrestore ended
succesfully.

It was very strange and, after lots of tests, as last chance, I was
suggested from COMPAQ to install the O.S. from scratch. I did it on a
spare disk of the 4100 and on the new 4.0d 0.S. the vrestore command
soon worked properly !! I added the 3rd patch and it still works, I
added C2 and it still works, I vrestored on both RAID and single disks,
on both UFS and ADVFS and it works perfectely.

So I think that the mess was due to something strange happened placing
patch over patch and update over update. The 4100 was born 4.0b and over
it I installed any patch as they were available. Then I updated the
system to 4.0d and later again I patched up to the 3rd patch. The 1000
was born 3.2c and it has been patched & updated up to 4.0d as the 4100.

Anyway now I have a new bootable disk with a clean and working system on
it, BUT the user database (C2 auth.db), all the layered products
(/usr/opt & /vat/opt), all the third party drivers, and all the licenses
(lmf database) are on the old bootable disk (on / and /usr).

I don't want to re-install everithing on the new system since it would
be very long and risky since I don't have anymore all the media and all
the paks. And what about the user database? I should loose each user
limits, expiration, password and so on.

The problem is: how to merge the 2 systems (/ and /usr) to have a
single clean system working without any loss of funcionality ?
I guess it is better to copy files and dirs from one system to the
other, but I don't know which files and dirs, and I don't which is
best: from the old system to the new or viceversa?

I hope I explained properly my situation and I hope you will help me,
anyway thanks to the list which is always the best resource on the net,

Ciao from Italy,
Emanuele
