Keyboard mapping

Hi,

I am trying to set up a KVM switch for my boss so he can use his
AlphaStation 500au and a PC using the same (Dec) monitor/keyboard.
After some experimenting a finally found one KVM switch that 'nearly'
works. The only remaining problem is that some keys are remapped by
the switch. Most of these can be fixed by xmodmap, but not all. Does
anyone know:

1. How to remap 'Caps_Lock'? I can remap it using xmodmap to the 'right'
key, and according to 'xev' the mapping works, except that apparently
Caps_Lock is handled *before* the X11 server so the key does *not*
act as a caps lock. I have the same problem with Num_Lock, too. Probably
I have the same problem with the control key.
2. How to feed low keycodes into xmodmap? According to xev, F1 now sends
a keycode of 5. xmodmap rejects any keycode below 8 or so. I have a total
of 5 keys in this range (function keys).

I only want to do it for X11 and I don't care what happens to the console
as I can remove the switch if disaster hits.

Thanks,
  Gyula

P.S.: I would prefer to stick to this KVM switch as I already spent to much
time/money on trying to find one that actually has the necessary video
bandwidth (most of the boxes on the market can go as high as 1024x768x50Hz :-(
