The problem was that sendmail 8.8.8, as delivered in the Digital Unix
4.0E distribution, did not work with the configuration file that is
made by its own mailconfig and mailsetup.
A few subtleties:
1) The www.sendmail.org page claims that Dec M4 macroing for sendmail
is broken and we should use Gnu M4 instead
2) probably the crucial one...No mail can be delivered when the
NIS map for aliases isn't there, if you are using NIS.
3) Thanks to joe_at_meng.ucl.ac.uk for sending me a config file that works
If anyone has successfully made sendmail 8.9.3 for Digital Unix I would
like to talk with you.
