I've gotten myself in a bit of a pickle :-(
I just inherited management duties for an Alpha clone. sizer reported it was
an "EB164". It was running Digital Unix 4.0 and bootup messages included
"Alpha 21164 Evaluation Board 300MHz system"
"Firmware revision: 4.4"
"PALcode version 0.00".
I wanted to upgrade to Tru64 UNIX 4.0E which requires a firmware upgrade. I
called the vendor who assured me that Compaq doesn't support firmware upgrades
for this board. This is the same vendor who didn't supply *any* hardware
documentation. Undaunted, I continued on.
A Web search seemed to indicate that the EB164 was the motherboard for the
AlphaPC 164. The Firmware Update version 5.3 CD didn't have anything related
to the EB164, but there was an [ALPHAPC164] directory. I booted from the CD,
selected [ALPHAPC164]FWUPDATE.EXE and selected "Update SRM console". The
routine responded "Could not find firmware image."
Undaunted I continued on. In the archives for this list, I found an article
"SUMMARY:EB164 Firmware Update, for DU4.0->4.0b upgrade" in which Robert Suh
<robs_at_amazon.com> described a procedure to put the update .exe and rom image
files .rom on a FAT-formatted floppy and use the SRM update command. I also
found a copy of the "Alpha SRM Console for Alpha Microprocessor Evaluation
Boards User's Guide" on the Web. Armed with my newfound knowledge, a sense of
bravado, and a newly made floppy, I entered
>>>update -path fat:PC164SRM.ROM/dva0 -target srmrom
and the routine went ahead and reported that the update was successful.
On power cycle, I see *nothing* on the console monitor or a terminal connected
to COM1.
Does anyone have any suggestions besides the obvious one? ;-)
