Thanks all who replied to the question: The issue will boils down to that
question
1. question 1 - this seems to be true
2. question 2 is not true and according to one respondent. We plan on
running some test
3. question 3 is only true if you are using NIS or run NIS+ in compatiblity
mode.
4. question 4 is true, NIS must be run in compabiltity mode.
5. question 5 - We received one lead on a third party product the url is
the following: www.memco.com, I have contacted them yet.
6. question 6 - I really did not get any responses about using dce. One
person did mention kerberos.
Several people suggested using secured shell and use rdist and secure copy
to push out the passwd and other files.
again thanks for all that replied.
Orginal question:
Hello,
I am getting ready to build a mixed environment of Suns and Dec unix. I
would like to verify what I have found out to date.
1. We cannot run C2 security with NIS in a mixed NIS environment
2. We cannot run Sun shadow password in a mixed NIS environment
3. We can run in a unsecured mode in either environment.
4. Dec unix will not talk to NIS+ directly on a SUN, you must run it in
compabiltity mode.
5. There are no third party or DEC products to solve this issue, of running
a mixed unix environment and attempting to secure it, using NIS or NIS+
6. The only product that will work is DCE which in a small environment of a
few dozen systems is overkill.
Just for the record, I am attempting to find a easy way to have several
suns and DEC systems, share usernames, uids, etc,. in a secure environment.
How has others solved this problem?
