su redirect in a script

Anyone running Oracle 7.3.4.X.X on DU 4.0D have any idea why this won't work
from the command line:

su - oracle << EOF
lsnrctl start
EOF

It hangs and says "You still have jobs running"

Just FYI it works just fine if the script is called by cron, it only hangs
if you execute the script from the command line
